“What is Morality…”
“Judgement to distinguish right and wrong, vision to see the truth, courage to act upon it, dedication to that which is good, integrity to stand by the good at any price. But where does one find it?”
I like this excerpt from Atlas Shrugged because it doesn’t just say morality is the principle of doing the right thing, it describes the principles that characterize morality for Ayn Rand. Ayn describes these principles to point out their void in the book. The society has fickle moral ground, wont put up with any statement that displeases them, and is selfish and cowardly. These are qualities of the depraved.
I expressed to my dad my confusion of the meaning of the book’s title. Through that chat, I found out that Atlas is a titan of Greek mythology that was banished to uphold the heavens. Armed with that knowledge and having read a good chunk of the book, “Atlas Shrugged” makes me picture Atlas, upholder of all things good, shifting the delicate heavens and agitating it like a snow globe. It is not the fault or the action of anybody apart of the heavens for the ensuing chaos, it is some strange momentous outside force that all but very few of the people have succumbed to.
It makes me ponder, like the snow after being shaken in the snow globe, will the morality of the world settle back to where it was?
I guess I will find out at the end of the book.
Anyway, Christmas was great. I spent some valuable time with my mom, mimi, papa and brothers and their significant others. For gifts, I received a bag for my motorcycle, a rice cooker, a sushi kit, two books, thermal tights (its gettin cold), a harmonica and two gift cards. I had gifted my little brother his own helmet, so he can ride with me. My twin brother and I also plan to take Dad to a Brazilian restaurant. It will be a present for my dad and me. I have never been.
I haven’t wrestled for about two weeks because practice has been out for Christmas break. So in athletic boredom, I picked up a pullup routine. Every morning I will do pullups of some variety, with my end goal to be able to do muscle ups like this guy. My max reps are around 16-17 at the moment.
Today is a good day to be great.
